Wednesday Tidbits: Spoilerific Edition

I hate spoilers. Hate ‘em. If I could go into every show completely ignorant of what was going to happen, I’d be a happy little blogger. This is a bit difficult when I have to spend a great deal of time trolling the web for TV news, but I still do what I can to stay spoiler-free. For that reason, there is no way I’m going to click on any link for Dollhouse spoilers, but if you simply can’t wait till the fall for a new injection of Whedon TV, have at it.

Not nearly so spoilerific, but still containing some casting information and general plot points is this article from USA Today, summarizing how several shows plan to end their strike-shortened season. The one about House, the unicorn and the school bus is particularly surprising.

TV with PV: April 30

Tonight’s television requires very few brain cells, making it perfect for the mid-week slump.

Every season, I vow never to watch again, and every season, it sucks me back in. Yes, it’s America’s Next Top Model. I have to watch, though. How else would I fully appreciate the genius of the fourfour recaps? (CW, 8:00pm)

I may or may not watch Top Chef, as well. In theory, I like this show, but somehow the last episode has been waiting on my hard drive for a week, and I’ve felt no motivation to watch it. With so few interesting characters, the show has become — dare I say it — less appetizing. (Bravo, 10:00pm)

Tipple Tuesday: Lost

Do the many unanswered questions and convoluted plots on Lost drive you to drink? Pop Vultures has your back, with an easy game you can play along with at home. However, we do not take any responsibility if you have to phone in sick the next day — this game is not for the faint of liver.

The rules of the Lost drinking game are far simpler than the show itself, though they do require a well-stocked liquor cabinet.

Tuesday Tidbits: BBC Edition

  • The BBC has picked up Being Human for a full series. Although it won’t air until 2009, it’s good to know that a show about a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost sharing a flat will get a second chance. If we’re really lucky, they’ll expand to include a witch and a troll and create the first supernatural soap opera.
  • In case the Thursday TV schedule wasn’t crowded enough, the BBC has gone and placed The Invisibles on that night. The comedy/drama (I will not use the word dramedy unless someone pays me to do so) stars Anthony Stewart Head and Warren Clarke as two former thieves who have retired to the Devon countryside but find themselves unable to adapt to a law-abiding life. Wacky hijinks are sure to ensue. It premieres on BBC1 Thursday night at 9:00.

The networks all moved their quality programming to other days to avoid competing with the ratings juggernaut that is American Idol. The result is that there is nothing else worth watching on Tuesdays.

So, I keep watching this ridiculous show, despite the fact that everyone I actually liked was sent home long ago, leaving us with a bunch of soulless singing robots. At the very least, the show’s ratings are dropping quickly, so we can look forward to some dramatic producer involvement before much longer. Perhaps the contestants will have to sing atop an active volcano in order to prove they can stand the heat of the music business? One can only hope.

    One Frakking Great Show

Each week, when I watch Battlestar Galactica, I feel a wee bit nervous. Will this be the week the show suddenly stops being fabulous? Will it somehow take a wrong turn, make Baltar humble, or the president infallible, or force Starbuck to deal with her issues in therapy? And, each week, I can only lean back after the episode and say, “Frak, that was good.” Because, yes, I do say frak. You got a problem with that?

It’s not that the show hasn’t had its missteps — some fans are still bitter about the black market episode — but overall it has been terribly consistent, not just in quality but in characterization and themes, and this fourth (and final) season has been remarkable in the way it has woven together elements from previous seasons. Much like Lost, having a fixed end point has only benefited the show, as suddenly there is no treading water: each episode, each scene matters - and are they ever making the most of it.

After the jump, thoughts and spoilers on the season so far.

The Discovery Channel Loves You, Too

I don’t tend to get emotionally invested in television commercials, at least ones that don’t involve puppies and kittens doing impossibly cute things. And yet, this ad for Discovery Channel gets me every time. It’s nothing more, or less, than a celebration of the entire world. Sure, the world’s got a few problems, but it’s still pretty freaking amazing. This just warms me to the bottom of my jaded, cynical Gen-X heart.

What do you think? Does it inspire all sorts of post-ironic joy in you, too?

Since I watched entirely respectable television last night, I better balance that out tonight with the teen soap twofer.

First up is Gossip Girl, which came back with a strong episode last week. This show is so deliciously rich, with its Machiavellian teenagers, lush New York settings, and fabulously over the top story arcs, yet it still manages to have a genuine heart beating beneath all the silliness. I take back any reservations I had at the beginning of the season. (CW, 8:00pm)

Now that I’ve admitted my shameful One Tree Hill secret, I can openly say that I’ll be watching it this week. Without reading any spoilers, I can safely guess that one character will have their heart broken by someone they’ll have forgotten about in two more episodes, someone will get bad news, and someone else will behave completely out of character in order to further some ridiculous plot line. (CW, 9:00pm)

ETA: I’m not sure where my head is today, because I posted this before including the new episodes of How I Met Your Mother (CBS, 8:30), Bones (Fox, 8:00) and House (Fox, 9:00). It looks like Monday wants to compete with Thursday for best TV night of the week.

    TV Blog Coalition: April 25-27

This has been a crazy weekend here at Pop Vultures. Apparently, I underestimated people’s enthusiasm for nostalgia and puppets, as this week’s Sesame Street Friday 5 got the full-on Digg Effect, completely knocking the site out for several hours on Friday night. It all worked out in the end, though, as the New York Times Laugh Lines Blog picked it up, allowing me to say that I’ve been listed, however briefly, in the NYT — and I didn’t even have to go on a midtown crime spree to accomplish it. Plus, I learned a Very Important Lesson about server space, so it all worked out in the end.

What’s been going on with the rest of the Coalition?

    • Buzz played agent to Lauren Graham and asked what her next career move should be. (BuzzSugar)
    • Sandie shared pictures from the set of Moonlight. (Daemon’s TV)
    • Here at PV, I liveblogged the UK’s BAFTA Television Awards, in which shows most Americans have never heard of took home the big prizes. (Pop Vultures)
    • Rae listened in on a teleconference with Jason Dohring about the return of Moonlight and shares her favorite bits. (RTVW)
    • You soon won’t forget Sarah Marshall. Yep, Scooter can write uber-cheesy headlines with the best of them. (Scooter McGavin’s 9th Green)
    • This week, the TV Addict set the internet ablaze with his review of the highly anticipated Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica. (the TV Addict)
    • How I Met Your Mother introduced everyone to Vance’s Canada! Welcome, eh! (Tapeworthy)
    • This week, Jace dished about the Torchwood season finale but he was really all about the shape of things to come on Lost. (Televisionary)
    • TiFaux launched a new regular feature this week with Dan recruiting some of his gal pals for Ask a Lesbian About This Week’s Work Out. This week, they addressed Jackie’s new haircut and Rebecca’s shouting for attention. (TiFaux)
    • Jennifer was downright giddy after Robin and Barney’s kiss on How I Met Your Mother and couldn’t resist gushing about the Robin Sparkles-centered episode guest starring James Van Der Beek. And she can’t stop singing, “I’m building sandcastles in the sand.” (Tube Talk)
    • Kate scoured casting notices until she was able to confirm that yes, there really will be a Wedding of the Year on Gossip Girl (TV Filter)

    TV with PV: April 27

Tonight’s another quiet night for me, thankfully (I’m still getting caught up on Thursday’s shows).

I  gave up on Desperate Housewives long ago and never got into Brothers and Sisters, but they’re both on tonight. If you’re still watching, feel free to tell me what I’m missing. (ABC, 9:00pm and 10:00pm)

Instead, I’m going highbrow tonight, with Miss Austen Regrets on BBC1. When I’m not watching television, I’m usually reading, and I loves me some Jane Austen. Yes, I am a cliché. This one-off drama, based on Austen’s own letters, tracks the later years of the author’s life. It’s sure to be shown on PBS before too much longer for the US Austenites. (BBC1, 8:00pm)
