Shameless Promotion

The PV writers are a diverse bunch, with careers ranging from novelist to journalist to scriptwriter to whatever it is that Plattie does. Well, Fergus has just added another title to his resume: music video director.

Check out this ditty from Scottish comedy rock act The Plimptons, produced and directed by our own Fergus Mitchell and featuring a cake-throwing cameo from Jess.

More Who for You

For all you US Doctor Who fans that are a few weeks behind those in the UK, don’t forget that Anna’s Who recaps come out according to the UK schedule. Of course, it’s worth going back a few weeks for Who goodness, isn’t it? Friday’s episode of The Doctor’s Daughter is pre-recapped for your reading pleasure.

Station Break

If you could see me right now, you would see the very picture of shame-facedness. Of embarrassed dejection. Maybe even of desperate humility as I beg you, my fabulous readers, to bear with PV’s radio silence for a bit longer.

There are a fair number of changes afoot in my life right now. While this doesn’t actually mean major changes for the site, it does mean that things are currently very unpredictable. The big news is that I’m moving to Glasgow in a month’s time. I tell you this not only to make it easier for potential stalkers, but because this week’s quest for a flat has been all encompassing. I’ve been pounding the streets of Glasgow, far away from my beloved Internet. I think I’m starting to show withdrawal symptoms, honestly. Only the purchase of a truly terrible tuna sandwich at a Wi-Fi cafe has allowed me this dear online moment.

I suppose it was too much to ask for the site to remain stable while my life gave up even a tenuous grip on stability, but this is all temporary. I promise lots of posts next week to make up for it all.

In the meantime, if anyone spoils me for the Lost season finale, I will cut them.

Station Break

Things have been a bit quiet around here recently, I know. I wish I could say it was because I won the lottery and decided to swan off to the Turkish coast for a few days, but alas, that is not the case. Instead, this week is the last big deadline of the year at work, which means 14-hour days and no time to a) write or b) watch TV. It’s horrible, I tell ya.

The good news, however, is that not only is this the last big deadline of the year, but it’s my last year in this job. In two months, I will be returning to a life of academia and the accompanying penury, ensuring that I will constantly turn to this poor, neglected site when I must procrastinate on writing a paper. Plus, I’ll be too poor to do anything else.

Thanks for sticking with PV through the quiet times.

Gimme a Break

There is no Friday 5 today. Nope. Not there. Sorry. In fact, I’ve been a wretched excuse for a blogger lately, and I am sorry about that. There are lots of excuses I could make, but basically I’ve been trying to fit 30 hours into each day and failing to bend space and time to my will. I’m rather put out about that, to be honest.

The good news is that the worst is behind me and PV service will be picking up again. Not this week, though. Oh, no. I was so envious of all the US-based TV bloggers that got to attend the Paley Festival for the Buffy, Chuck, Friday Night Lights and X-Files panels, I had to console myself by buying tickets to Morocco. I may not be able to watch US TV as it airs or attend any network shindigs, but I do get national health care and cheap travel.

There will still be posts, but regular service won’t resume for at least another week and a half. Still, if you’re really lucky, you might get a mid-week report on Moroccan television. Think they’ll be showing the premiere of Battlestar Galactica while I’m there?

Raise Your Voice

Someone pointed out to me this weekend that I haven’t written about season 4 of Lost yet. I have good reasons for this — namely, that I don’t see the episode till Friday evening, and by the time I’d get around to posting on Monday, I’d be so muddled as to what actually happened that the odds of producing a sensible post would be slim indeed (arguing whether “sense” and “Lost” should ever share the same sentence is a debatable point, I’m sure).

However, she was absolutely right, and there will definitely be a mid-season Lost check-in coming this week. It also got me thinking: what other favorite shows have I been overlooking? Here is your chance, fellow Vultures, to tell me what you would like to see more of on this site.  What are your top three favorite shows? Which articles have been your favorites? This is your blog, too — don’t let me miss anything important!

Though, in all honesty, if anyone says Big Brother, I will probably ignore that particular request.

Commercial Break

Today’s Friday 5 is running a bit late because it turns out that I do actually require sleep. And here I was thinking that’s what coffee was for.

To tide you over till it’s posted later today, how about you add the Pop Vultures Facebook application? Not only does it deliver the latest PV posts to your profile page, but it tells the world of your love for slightly obnoxious hot pink letters. How can you resist?

And be sure to check back later for a monsterific Friday 5 that, if I had any sense, I’d really be saving for Halloween. Good thing I don’t have any of that.

Spelling Interrupted

Looking for Spelling Saturday? Sorry, but it’s taking the week off while I recover from jet lag. Yep, I’m back from the U.S., having spent an entire week in a house with DirecTV and never turning the TV on. I don’t even think I’m ill.

I plan to make up for lost time today with Season 4 of The Wire. The Adventures of Brandon and Brenda will return next week.

Looking Back: PV in 2007

Pop Vultures turned three months old this month, but that’s not going to stop us from doing a year-in-review of links. Below, the most popular posts from PV’s inception to sometime last Friday.

September

  • Marcia kicked things off with an explanation of just why she loves television and why she refuses to feel guilty about it.

October

November

  • Marcia compiled a helpful list of 21 ways to survive the writers’ strike, though the last item on the list is starting to look a bit silly.
  • Plattie contributed several wonderful pieces on highbrow BBC programming, but it was Strictly Come Dancing that won the popularity contest — just like it did in the ratings.
  • Jess was kind enough to share her Spelling love with us all through weekly recaps of Beverly Hills 90210, proving that we are never too old to go back to high school (though we are much, much better dressed).

December

  • Marcia created her Christmas wishlist. So far, she’s 0 for 12 — and she didn’t get a Wii, either. She might need to have a word with the fat man.
  • We wrapped up the year by thinking much too hard about television opening titles, with posts on the 5 best theme songs and 5 best opening credits. As usual, no one agreed with the selections.

Thanks for reading and helping to make these first three months so great. Also, we plan to celebrate the sixth-month anniversary with fireworks, a chili cook-off and pony rides, so stick around for 2008. American Idol isn’t going to make fun of itself, you know.
